Cartilage in the spine can break down over time, causing bone spurs to form and the spinal discs to shrink. The bone spurs and enlarged facet joints can narrow the spinal canal, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. For some, this can also lead to a condition known as spinal stenosis. This condition occurs when the spinal canal narrows, which can pinch the spinal cord and nerves. Symptoms include pain, weakness, numbness, or cramping in the back, legs, arms, neck, or shoulders.
